Directions have also been issued to departments to implement the recommendations of Justice M R Hariharan Nair Commission that looked into the Pulmedu stampede tragedy at Sabarimala which left 102 pilgrims dead in January this year, Shivakumar said replying to a calling attention. In view of the stampede, restrictions on vehicle parking and its entry to Pulmedu have been imposed this year. Steps have also been taken to ensure drinking water supply and power supply in the Pulmedu forest route for the benefit of Ayyappa pilgrims, he said. The commission had rcommended about 30 measures to control crowd movement, inflow of pilgrims and necessary arrangments to manage the crowd and for parking vehicles. Pilgrimage Information Centres would be set up in all important points on the way to the hill shrine, he said. The stampede occurred when pilgrims were returning after witnessing 'makarajyothi' at Sabarimala on the pulmedu forest near Vandiperiyar on January 14 last year. The report had asked the government to implement the security manual including installation of removable tower-lights at places including Pullumedu for Sabarimala before the start of pilgrime season this year. The commission had also wanted authorities to make necessary arrangements to enable pilgrims to have darshan of 'makarajyothi' at different places to avoid over crowding in one place. |
