CM allots Rs 750 cr for urban development

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today allocated Rs 750 crore to carry out development works in urban areas. Out of the total Rs 750 crore, Rs 500 crore will be used for Corporations and Municipalities barring Chennai and Rs 250 crore will be used for Town Panchayats.

According to an official release here, the Chief Minister has also ordered to construct new buildings to Town Panchayat offices considering the fact that the flow of people to these offices had increased.

The release said as per the 2011 census, 48.45 per cent people were living in urban areas and it was expected to increase to 67 per cent in the next 20 years by 2030.

There was a compelling need to provide all basic amenities to the people in the wake of people migrating to urban areas for job and the rapid pace of urbanisation, it said,

Keeping this in mind, Jayalalithaa launched the Integrated Urban Development Mission, aimed at providing all basic amenities like drinking water, sewerage treatment, health, sanitation, rain water harvesting, roads, streets, solid waste management, parking lots, bus bays and parks in all Corporations and Municipalities.

She had also announced that these works  would be undertaken at a total cost of  Rs 6654.03 crore (Rs 5890.12 crore for Corporations and Rs 763.91 crore for Municipalities).

Under the project, She had allocated Rs 757.28 crore in the first phase during 2011-12 and works were being taken up in Corporations and Municipalities.

Similarly for the current year 2012-13,  Jayalalithaa announced allocation of Rs 750 crore (Rs 500 crore for Corporations and Rs 250 crore for Municipalities) to take up various projects under the Integrated Urban Development Mission in the State.

The release said the Chief Minister, taking into consideration the increase in number of people visiting the Panchayat offices, today ordered construction of new offices for all Panchayats in the State, which were at present functioning in old buildings.

Under this project, 15 Panchayats would get new buildings at a cost of Rs 40 lakh each during the current year. She has allocated Rs six crore for this.

The Chief Minister also announced allocation of Rs one crore for construction of the office of Assistant Directorate of Panchayats, Tirunelveli Zone. This would help in improving the services rendered to the people in Corporations, Municipalities and Panchayats.
