President of Jeppiaar Institute of Technology Jeppiaar was arrested this morning in connection with the case relating to the collapse of a scaffolding of an under-construction indoor auditorum-cum-basketball court that killed 10 migrant workers on 6 August.

.

The arrest of the academician was done in a hospital at Egmore where he was undergoing treatment for some illness.

Later, the court remanded him to 15 days custody but permitted him to continue his treatment while in custody.

It is alleged that the collapse of the stadium had resulted because of use of  sub-standard construction materials.

It may be noted here that Kancheepuram district police had already arrested college director Maria Wilson and engineers, Arul Jaya Aprose, Rajkumar and Sudhanandan hailing from Nagercoil.

The 10 migrant workers were from Orissa and Assam. The accident took place at Kunnam village in Sunguvarchatram police station limits on 6 August.

The tragedy took place when the workers were engaged in raising a 40-foot wall as part of an indoor auditorium-cum-basketball court complex at Jeppiaar Institute of Technology, Jeppiaar Nagar in Kunnam.

While six workers, standing near the wall to pass on bricks made of cement fly ash and cement mixture, were trapped under the debris, six others Saagar, Chatrughan, Rangai, Binoth, Bishal and Naren  who were engaged in raising the wall suffered injuries.
