The victory was set up by England pacers, who used the zippy track brilliantly to bundle out Sri Lanka for 212 in 47.3 overs after inviting them to bat on Friday. James Anderson and Stuart Broad took three wickets each while Graham Onions claimed two scalps for England. It took some gutsy batting by Thilina Kandamby (53) and Angelo Mathews (52) for Sri Lanka to reach a respectable total. England then overcame two early jolts to overhaul the target with five overs to spare at new Wanderers stadium. The England win has also spiced up the battle for the semifinal spots in Group B with Sri Lanka and hosts South Africa also having one win each under their belt. It was a welcome triumph for England after their morale shattering 6-1 mauling in a seven-match series against Australia at home. Paul Collingwood with his 51-ball knock, studded with five fours and three sixes, provided impetus to the England chase and Owais Shah (44) and Morgan batted sensibly to build on that fiery innings.Shah and Morgan put together a 107-run stand for the fourth wicket to close the gap. Morgan batted with a steely resolve to steer England to win after the fall of Collingwood and Shah. He hit seven fours in his unbeaten 83-ball stay at the crease. Collingwood's strokeful innings came at a time when Kulasekara had struck twice to give Sri Lanka a good start. The paceman first trapped Joe Denley (5) and got his second wicket through the brilliance of Kandamby, who pulled off a stunning one handed catch at short mid-wicket when Andrew Strauss (9) went for a pull. Collingwood, however, ensured that England did not go the Lankan way and counter-attacked. He creamed Kulasekara for 14 runs in the 10th over, hitting a massive six over mid-wicket and followed it up with two smart boundaries on the leg-side. The former England captain was in full flow as he welcomed Mathews with a superbly timed boundary and extracted two sixes off Lasith Malinga as well. Sri Lanka were lucky to get his wicket as he dragged one off Malinga on to his stumps. But before departing he stitched together an important 63-run stand with Shah. Earlier, Kandamby and Mathews showed immense resilience while batting on a bouncy track after Anderson and Onions had polished off their top order. Within first six overs, Sri Lanka were reduced to 17 for four as hostile conditions made batting extremely difficult. The left-handed Kandamby first raised a stand of 64 with Thilan Samaraweera (30) for the fifth wicket and then reinvigorated the Lankans innings with a 82-run partnership with next man in Mathews. Realising that stroke-making was not easy, Kandamby and Matthews stuck to the basics and rotated the strike to get a feel of the pitch and started picking boundaries when the track started to ease out gradually. The splendid partnership though ended in disastrous fashion as a terrible mix up between the two resulted in the run out of Kandamby, who battled for 82 balls and helped himself with five boundaries. More drama followed as Matthews was also declared run out when he was blocked by Onions in his follow through while going for a second run but could not get to the other end. However, England captain took a brave decision and called back Mathews to resume his innings acknowledging the contribution of his bowler in the goof up. Mathews though could not cash in on the chance and soon became a victim of Broad. His innings lasted 73 balls which contained six boundaries. By sending the two set batsmen back to pavilion England again got control over the proceedings. Then came down Muttiah Muralitharan and entertainment followed him to the ground. He lofted Luke Wright over mid-off for a boundary in the first ball he faced and then smacked Broad for a six before being bowled by Broad. Earlier, England new ball bowlers, in a gap of 21 balls, got rid of dangerous Sri Lankan top order. Onions started the rot when he had Sanath Jayasuriya caught behind for a duck. In-form Tillakaratne Dilshan (2) joined his opening partner back in the hut when he went for a flashy drive off Anderson and ended up in the hands Morgan at backward point. Anderson struck again as he trapped Jayawardene (9) and Onion sent back rival skipper Kumar Sangakkara (1) to cause ripples in the rival camp. |
