Despite playing good cricket all through the Champions League Twenty20 , South African team, Warriors, were sent packing by Somerset in the penultimate league match of Group B. After losing by 12 runs, Warriors captain, Johan Botha, was gracious in admitting that Somerset had played better cricket. He said his team is disappointed, but added that they'd go back with a positive mindset and strive to come back to compete in the next |

On the pitch used for the match, Botha said, 'It wasn't the best Bangalore wicket we've seen. [But] they played really well. Craig Kieswetter showed his experience and his class and set up a really good total for them. The wicket almost played like [the one in] Chennai, where if you got behind the rate, it was hard to catch up. It was really slow and despite having a decent sized outfield, it was hard to get boundaries. You've got to give credit to the other team when they play better than you and I thought they closed out the game really well. On getting knocked out despite playing good cricket, he said, 'That's Twenty20 cricket. If you're not on the ball or if you switch off for one or two games... it can all turn [upside down] very quickly. We had a good start, we won two matches in a row and then we had a bit of a break. Pity that things had to end this way. We weren't just riding into the ground and getting a result, those guys played better than us to win the game. On the turning point in the match, Botha said, 'it's hard to pick one obvious turning point in a match of 40 overs. I thought Roelof [van der Merwe] batted pretty well in the first six overs to score 32 off 16 balls. [That meant] Craig [Kieswetter] could just knock the ball around and play himself in and bat through. They had a really good start and so did we. Probably in the middle period they controlled [the game] a little bit better than us and the rate got a little bit out of hand. When you bat second, nine runs an over starts looking tough. But if you're setting (targets), then you can easily get nine runs an over in the last four overs.' 'We came here not just to make up the numbers. We wanted to be in the semi-finals - that was our goal. It is very disappointing not to be there despite getting such a good start. I thought Jon-Jon Smuts and Colin Ingram batted beautifully. All the way through, we said if we can bat well we'll be in contention all the way. Especially, Jon-Jon... to come on his first overseas tour and play the way he did was great. On the bowling front, I thought we were pretty solid all the way through. But (we're a little disappointed) that we weren't up to scratch in two matches.' |
