Rajan Eye Care Hospital, T Nagar, has made great progress since its  establishment 1996 but it has not been resting on its laurels and is constantly endeavouring in the quest for excellence keeping in mind the interest of the public by offering affordable eye care.

In a chat with News Today, Dr Mohan Rajan, medical director of the hospital, listed out the achievements under his leadership over the years.
.
He said Rajan Eye Care Hospitial had conducted over 1,200 eye camps, 70,000 free cataract operations so far. Not stopping with that, the hospital plans for  a ‘Blind-free India’ where focus on cataract surgery is to be emphasised.

One step ahead of the others, it has an all-equipped van with laser operation facility and it has been pressed into service. Laser treatment is given in the van itself and other cases like cataract are referred to hospital.

With the three subsidiary organisations - Rotary Rajan Eye Bank, a project of Rotary Club of Madras T Nagar, RI Dist 3230, it takes care of corneal blindness with its network of eye banks; Chennai Vision Charitable Trust, a community ophthalmology wing, provides quality eye care for rural people; and Rajan Lasik Pavilion with wavelight Allegretto Lasik Laser to take care of refractive errors in patients.

Rajan Eye Care is the second in India and seventh in the world to carry out Osteo-Odonto-Kerato Prosthesis  (OOKP) for severely damaged eyes.

‘Tooth for an eye is a process  evolved by Professor Falcinelli G. At two stages the procedure of making an artificial cornea from the patient’s tooth and giving the most wanted sight is done’, he said. At this hospital, 42 patients have undergone OOKP.

The hospital runs training courses which include post-graduate training too Short- term fellowships in micro surgery, phacoemulsification training programmes, nursing assistant courses are offered apart from CMEs conducted with the aim of passing on the knowledge to other practising ophthalmologists.

‘Asia’s first scalaris micro incision, just a 1.6- mm cataract surgery and implant of portable IOL has been carried out at Rajan Eye Care Hospital.

And sutureless surgery is undertaken under the expertise of deputy managing director Sujatha Rajan’, Mohan Rajan said.

Eye problem in children has to be addressed early for they are twinkling stars. Super vision is attained by correcting refractive errors, he pointed out.

In essence, the hospital delivers excellent quality, yeoman service with able administration which remains its mission. Creating an awareness by more media campaigning is a felt necessity.

Cataract is ‘Paradise Lost’ and its cure is ‘Paradise Regained’. It is to be noted that poet John Milton, author of the both the epics, was himself blind. Cornea and eye bank denotes life after death as with your eyes the world is seen again.

Rajan Eye Care has answer to the ‘silent thief’ glaucoma, according to Dr Mohan Rajan.

Eye donation is the noblest of all. Tennis doyen and UN Ambassador for Peace Vijay Amrithraj and Hollywood film director Ashok Amrithraj brothers, through their Amrithraj Foundation, help Rotary Rajan Eye Bank, Rotary International, with matching grants and generous donations from philanthropists help in giving light to sight of the unfortunate.
