CM orders probe into fire mishap

The Tamilnadu government today announced a solatium of Rs one lakh each to the family ten people killed in a ghastly fire mishap at a private fire cracker manufacturing factory at Namaskarithanpatti village near Sivakasi, yesterday, and also ordered a probe into the cirumstances that led to the mishap.

Replying to a Special Call Attention motion given notice of by members of various political parties in the State Assembly, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said the government has accepted the report of the District Collector recommending Rs one lakh compensation to the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 to those severely injured as they hailed from a poor family ground and were working as labourers.

The Chief Minister also announced that a probe under section 9(1) of the Indian Explosives Act 1984 had been ordered into the circumstances that led to the mishap.

The District Additional Magistrate and the District Revenue Officer would conduct the probe, he added.

He said the government had also asked the officials to monitor whether the fireworks manufacturing units and its godowns had put in place adequate safety norms under the Explosives Act.
