A 30-year-old ragpicker stabbed an autodriver to death with a beer bottle following a tussle over a cigarette. According to reports, the victim Selvam, an autodriver, used to while away time with ragpicker Arumughan.
Yesterday, Selvam reportedly demanded a cigarette from Arumugham when an argument broke out between them. In a fit of rage Arumugham broke a beer bottle and stabbed Selvam to death before fleeing the spot. Police who rushed to the spot took the victim to a hospital where he died without responding to treatment. Selvam is survived by wife and a three-year-old baby.

Police round up rowdy elements Chennai police launched a storming operation last night and arrested 214 rowdies, ex-convicts and criminals. A press release said the operation was launched throughout the city last night on the orders of new city Police Commissioner T Rajendran.
The operation, conducted under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners, resulted in the arrest of 214 persons, who included 24 ex-convicts, 16 persons against whom arrest warrant was pending and more than 100 criminals.
Police also booked 10 people for drunken driving and fined 48 for riding two-wheelers without wearing helmet, the release added.
