VIT Riviera 2014 to celebrate Indian cinema

Vellore: Indian cinema in all its glory and grandeur will be part of Riviera 2014, the four-day annual International Sports and Cultural Carnival to be showcased at the VIT University here from 6 to 9 February.

Briefing newspersons about the four-day carnival at the VIT campus here on Wednesday, VIT University Chancellor G Viswanathan said Riviera 2014 will host 110 events, as compared to 106 events in 2013. ‘With the belief of introducing students to unexplored spheres and arts in life through our unique and radical workshops, Riviera will host 13 unique workshops like graffiti and theatre workshops,’ he said.

A Planning and Development summit will be held to discuss policies with respect to Indian scenario. VIT’s own literary festival with a book fair will be an additional attraction.

Being conducted for the first time, it will host a Spell Bee for students from the 3rd class to the college level.

‘A total of 500 students and 100 faculties are working for last three months to make this fest larger than life. In addition to being ISO Certified this year, we have also received the trademark for the Riviera Logo,’ Viswanathan said.

Over 4,000 students from over varied colleges across the globe are expected to participate in Riviera 2014, in addition to the 22,000 strong VITians themselves.

Riviera 2014 will host a plethora of fresh and innovative events such as the official curtain Raiser - VIT Debating Tournament with participants from various Indian Universities and countries including  Malaysia, Bangladesh, Philippines, United Kingdom and Singapore.

The tournament shall be in British Parliamentary format with world champions coming down to Vellore.

Riviera will hold a total of 20 sporting events including tournaments such as basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis, hockey, football, chess, table-tennis and many more sports.

The marathon, which kick starts the fest will be graced by former Indian athlete and Arjuna Award winner  Shiny Wilson and Indian Squash coach Cyrus Poncha will preside at the inauguration function on 6 February at 9 am.

The fourth and final day of the Riviera would witness actor Karthi gracing the valedictory function.
