48 tonnes of waste collected to curtail pollution after Bhogi

In a proactive move to address environmental concerns, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) successfully collected a substantial 48 tonnes of waste, encompassing clothes, plastics, and tyres, aimed at mitigating pollution post the Bhogi festival. The highest volume of waste was gathered in the Madhavaram zone, where a total of 7.04 tonnes were collected, comprising 800 kg of clothes, 140 kg of tyres, 4 tonnes of plastics, and 2 tonnes of miscellaneous waste materials. In the Royapuram zone, the GCC collected 4.74 tonnes of waste, including 1.28 tonnes of clothes, 860 kg of tyres, 1.35 tonnes of plastics, and 1.26 tonnes of other waste materials. This concerted effort significantly contributed to reducing pollution in various residential areas across zones like Tondiarpet, Tiruvottiyur, Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. The GCC’s commitment to environmental conservation also extended to penalizing residents who engaged in burning waste. A total fine of ₹31,400 was imposed on 314 residents found violating waste disposal norms by burning refuse. This strict measure reinforces the GCC’s dedication to fostering a cleaner and healthier environment. It is noteworthy that the residents in zones like Manali and Alandur demonstrated commendable adherence to waste disposal guidelines, resulting in the lowest quantity of waste collection and minimal reports of pollution in these areas.
