CMRL’s OMR construction resumes after setbacks

Chennai Metro Rail’s ambitious project to extend its network along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) corridor has encountered delays but is poised to regain momentum as construction work is set to resume soon.

The Phase II expansion project, encompassing a sprawling 116 kilometers across the city, faced disruptions last year primarily due to issues with the appointed construction agency. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), responsible for overseeing the project, terminated the contract with the initial firm and swiftly selected a new contractor to expedite the work.

The Sholinganallur to Siruseri stretch along OMR is of particular significance, forming a crucial link in the expansive 45.4 km metro network originating from Madhavaram. Commuters and residents in the area had expressed growing concerns over the sluggish progress of construction, voicing their apprehensions on social media platforms.

Acknowledging the importance of addressing these concerns and ensuring timely completion, officials have emphasized the implementation of stringent safety measures as work recommences. Enhanced lighting and other safety protocols are being prioritized to safeguard both workers and commuters during the construction phase.
