TN sees surge in applications for new ration cards

The Tamil Nadu state government has reported a significant increase in applications for new ration cards, with approximately 2.4 lakh people having applied. This surge in interest follows the implementation of welfare schemes like the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT), which provides financial assistance to women heads of families.

The Food and Consumer Protection Department revealed that the high number of applications has drawn considerable attention. The issuance of new ration cards had been halted since last July, but the state government has announced that the process will resume after June 4.

Currently, Tamil Nadu has a total of 22,419,359 active ration cards. These cards not only enable holders to purchase essential commodities at subsidized rates from fair price shops across the state but also grant access to various state government benefits.

Since 2017, Tamil Nadu has transitioned to smart ration cards, which streamline the distribution process and enhance the efficiency of welfare schemes. The ration cards are integral to the KMUT scheme, through which an amount of Rs 1000 per month is disbursed to women heads of families, providing crucial financial support.

The resumption of ration card issuance is anticipated to significantly benefit those who have applied, ensuring that more residents can access essential subsidies and welfare benefits.
