Tamil cinema and politics are two sides of the same coin. The glamour industry has produced several chief ministers in Tamilnadu, including M Karunanidhi, MGR, Janaki and Jayalalithaa. The State where the two major Dravidian parties – the AIADMK and DMK – hold fort, there are plenty of voices being heard now. Especially after the demise of Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi, plenty of political leaders see a possible scenario to seize political authority.
After Rajinikanth, Kamal, it now looks like Vijay is ready to throw his hat into the ring. At a function in Chennai recently, the actor dropped a hint at entering politics. He said, “In real life, if I become Chief Minister, I won’t be acting. I will perform the role with honesty. If people elect me, I want to eradicate corruption… When I meet you fans at such events, I feel overjoyed. There is an urgent need to weed out corruption.”
Anybody has the right to take the political plunge, but it is for the people to decide. The jury is still out on Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. Both are still newbies as far as electoral politics is concerned. It remains to be seen if they can do an MGR. Only time will tell.
