Chennai; Seated in her quiet flat in a gated community along Arcot Road at Saligramam, in the city, she looks relaxed sewing with needle and thread.
What started as a hobby for her a couple of years ago, has now turned into a passion. Sivakami Palaniappan (56) at ‘The Sewing Spot’ works only for a limited time every day, in the afternoons, and makes colourful bags and pouches.
Sivakami teaches women of all age groups. “It’s a heaven for ladies at home, who when they feel bored can become more creative and do wonders,” says Sivakami and adds that free workshops are held for them every first Saturday.
“Even a beginner with little sewing knowledge can make quilts, bags, pouches, creative patch blocks, crochet, hand embroidery and more. So, my workshop will be a tool to enhance their skill,” Sivakami says.
At ‘The Sewing Spot’, free workshops are also held for children above 10 years. “I teach from the very beginning of sewing. They start to work on pillow covers and, later, on pouches,” she says.
“Once they master it, I can help them make mug rugs, tote bags and quilted baskets,” she adds.
To avail of this opportunity one has to book a slot for the free workshop in advance. Sivakami says her place can accommodate only three members at a time. The workshop timings will be from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.
The Sewing Spot is located at 6-E, Block-2, Ceebros Shyamala Garden, 136, Arcot Road, Saligramam. Sivakami can be reached at 96772 26062.
