Chennai: The ongoing strike by private water tankers in Chennai is hitting commercial establishments badly, so much so that some of them have downed their shutters.

Reports say that the popular mall in Royapettah, Express Avenue, has closed its doors for visitors today as there is water shortage owing to the strike.

The private tankers began their strike yesterday after the Madras High Court’s decision over banning of illegal extraction of groundwater and streamlining groundwater drawal for commercial purposes.

The stir has severely affected Chennaiites who, especially those living in high rise apartments, depend heavily on private water tankers for their daily needs.

In a related development, those supplying packaged drinking water have also gone on strike from today.

Chennaiites, even those living in slums, depend on water cans and the strike is bound to affect almost every house in the city.
