Chennai: In two separate incidents at Velacheri and Guindy, the police have arrested four persons involved in abandoning newborn babies.
On 17 October, a baby was found in a garbage bin at Velacheri. In connection with this, Vasantha (24) and her mother Vijaya (55), residents of Kannigapuram, were arrested along with Vasantha’s lover Jayarajan (25).
Vasantha was employed with the Forest Department where she met Jayarajan who worked as a driver.
The duo were in a relationship and Vasantha became pregnant. Initially, Jayarajan promised to marry her, but later went back on his word.
Subsequently, Vasantha gave birth to the child. Embarrassed that her neighbours would come to know of it, Vijaya placed the baby in a vessel and dumped it in a garbage bin in the neighbourhood. Yesterday, the Guindy police arrested all three of them.
In an unrelated case, Lavanya (22), a native of Trichy who lived in Karambakkam, Porur, was to marry her distant relative. The marriage was fixed two years ago. She worked for a private firm in Central and her fiance visited her often.
Recently, her mother passed away, following which her fiance called off the wedding. By then, Lavanaya was pregnant with his child. After giving birth to the child, she abandoned it among the bushes in Karambakkam.
The police have arrested her and are searching for her fiance.
