Eco expo on plastic usage was conducted in Chennai suburb

Chennai: An eco expo to emphasise the reduction of plastic usage and to increase the usage of other alternatives is going on at Selaiyur Government Higher Secondary School in the city suburb.

Organised by the Municipalities of Tambaram, Pallavaram and Chengalpet along with ‘Save Tirupur Movement’, a Tirupur-based NGO, the exhibition concluded recently.

Speaking about the event, an official said, “For a long time, we have been talking about shifting to organic products, but people are not aware of the alternatives available. This exhibition will give an overall picture right from plastic-alternatives, garbage disposal and composting.”

The fair has various stalls for eco-friendly products from all over the country.

“It is only when we take the products locally, will people adopt to the change. We have already held the exhibition in eight other districts including Tiruchi, Salem, Nagercoil and Thoothukudi. We are hosting it in Tambaram for the benefit of the residents living in the vicinity,” said ‘Save Tirupur Movement’ founder Veerapathaman.

Speaking about the movement, he said, “Tirupur has been offering employment opportunities to several unskilled labourers all over the country. With this exhibition, self help groups (SHGs) from the district will be the beneficiaries which will in turn boost the industrial sector.”

“Experts also demonstrate about composting at home with the garbage generated and waste management at community-level. We have also invited people to explain about bio-gas usage,” he noted.

In addition, the programme aims to address the bulk waste generators and the local Municipalities have invited hoteliers, choultry-owners and others to attend and manage their waste effectively.

The fair will exhibit products such as cotton bags, cotton pads, menstrual cups, bamboo straws, paper pens and pencils, it is learnt.
