Tips to look like a rugged gentleman

Chennai: Back in the old days, handsome men who starred in movies often had this weather-beaten look. They were rugged, rough, sporting a tough beard and grisly hair. Maybe the first thing that comes to your mind is Clint Eastwood in the iconic cult western flick, ‘The Good, The bad and The Ugly’ or maybe if you are an action thriller fan like me, you think about Tom Cruise in the ‘Mission Impossible’ series or Thala Ajith in ‘Vivegam.’

The word ‘Ruggedly handsome’ became a trend right when a lot of survival dramas and action thrillers started taking a major up beat at theatres. It becomes quite obvious that a lot of young men have tried to get the right ‘rugged’ look.

What does it mean

A man qualifies to be ruggedly handsome if he is physically masculine, normally sports a beard, wears a rough attire. As far as his wardrobe is concerned, the off-beaten look reigns supreme.

The looks

Start wearing traditional work wear like flannel shirts, leather boots, woollen coats and denim. You can also go for jackets, trench coats, and earth-toned pieces that look tough. A lot of men also opt to wear gears meant for outdoor activities. Wearing traditional hunting patterns like buffalo plaids and gun-club checks looks great. It is fine to wear them with the wrinkles, the frays, the holes, the wear and tear, the minor damage. These are work clothes. They have character. Add patches and repair when needed, rather than replacing the garment.

Shirts and denims

Crushed shirts and rough denim-like material are the norm if you wish to get the rugged look. You can sport half-sleeve shirts or also wear full-sleeves but make sure that you fold them up to the elbows. The rugged gentleman needs are something sturdy and simple denim that gives room for his ankle to breathe. Opting for a pencil-fit denims won’t be the right choice but instead you can choose to wear denims that are thick. Better avoid denims with fancy dyes, fades or embellishments. Brands like Levi’s Vintage and Edwin are good bets. Steer clear of anything too baggy or too tight.

Wearing footwears like a boss

A rugged gentleman’s look isn’t complete without a rough, heavy boots that can tread anywhere. Sport shoes that can help you work your way up a mountain or perhaps through a field. A rugged gentleman’s footwear should look like as if it has come straight from a lonely outback. Leather boots will be the right choice for you.
