Chennai: For the first time in Rotary history in Chennai, Rotary district 3232 celebrated Deepavali with 1,400 orphan kids transported from their shelter-houses to a common venue. The day-long event took place Saturday at Anna Adarsh College for Women, Anna Nagar, and witnessed full entertainment to make the children cheerful. All of them were given new clothes and sweet boxes as well.
The club’s representative Sreehari Abhilash, said, “The children were from 38 orphanages. Rotary District governor Babu Peram kickstarted the initiative with the support of over 50 Rotary clubs in the city. In the event, we went green with no fireworks used. It was a green Deepavali for us.”
“Every year, we celebrate Deepavali with much fanfare but we forget about those living in orphanages. For them, the festival is just another day in their lives. This was taken into account to make their day a little better from our side. Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers spread across 200 countries who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe,” he added.
