Chennai: To address the acute shortage of sand required for construction industry, the State Government is procuring sand from Malaysia.
Earlier 56,750 metric tonnes were imported and the pre-booking for it lasted from 5 October until 8 November. Now another 52,000 tonnes of sand will be imported from Malaysia.
According to sources, the consignment will reach Ennore harbour on 20 November and online pre-booking will be available for buyers after that.
Reports say that 51,991 tonnes were sold from the first consignment and only 4,759 is remaining which is expected to be sold in the next three days.
The Public Works Department charged one unit comprising 4.5 metric tonnes Rs. 9,990, while five units are priced at Rs 49,950. The website also mentions that sand will be sold to anybody who books it online, irrespective of which state the buyer belongs to. The bookings can be made through the website and also through the TN Sand Mobile app.
