Chennai: Chettinad Players, a theatre house from Chettinad Vidyashram performed their latest epic, ‘Parasurama – Wielder of the Axe Justice‘ at the Kumararajah Muthiah Hall in Chettinad Vidyashram, R A Puram on Wednesday. The audience were enthralled by the powerful performance of the young cast that included children.
The English play was about Parasurama, who is considered as the sixth avatar of Vishnu in Hinduism. The story follows the conflict over the contention of Surabhi (the divine cow) by an evil King.
Jamadagni’s son, Rama intervines to stop the atrocity of the King. Rama then seeks blessings of Lord Shiva, who gives him an axe bestowed with the power to destroy any forms of evil. This invincible ‘Parasu’ or axe, ordains Rama as ‘Parasurama.’
Parasurama then starts using his axe to bring justice to the people oppressed by the tyrant King. But in the end, he gains clarity and wisdom and lays down his axe to become a teacher.
The epic play was directed by Jayakumar and written by Deepika Kumaravel and Elango Kumaravel. Padmashree Thota Tharrani and Thota Rohini brilliantly designed the set for the play while Paul Jacob’s music gripped the audience.
The light effects was done by Lawrence. Chettinad Vidyashram principal Amudha Lakshmi was the creative head of the show.
Chettinad Players have previously performed several stage plays that includes Karna, Vaali Vadham, Bheeshma, Shiva – The Eternal Giver, to name a few. ‘Parasurama – Wielder of the Axe Justice’ is their 14th production.
