Chennai: The Greater Chennai police have handed over two Romanian tourists to the City Crime Branch (CCB) for inquiring the case of fake ATM cards they were possessing.
According to the police, the duo identified as Nicolia Clumpuliauc (35) and Norcia George (36) were caught at Sadasivam Nagar, Madiappakam yesterday when they were using an ATM. Public alerted the police when they found them trying out a number of cards at several ATMs in the area.
It is said they attempted to flee when police reached the spot. They were caught by Inspector Shekar Singh. The duo gave him contradictory statements during questioning. The police seized 27 cards from the duo.
Police are trying to find out what type of cards they were and for what they were being used. Police subsequently, detained them on grounds of suspicion yesterday.
The men arrived in the city on 24 November on a tourist visa and lived in Thoraipakkam, OMR.
Police also found 100 ATM-type cards, a magnetic device, four Iphones, a laptop and Rs 70,000 after searching the place they were staying. A special unit of CCB is conducting an investigation into the case.
