Footpaths make pedestrians feel safe but for some residents of Mylapore and RA Puram, accessing a footpath is a luxury they can’t afford.
According to N Mahadevan, the Mundakkanni Amman Koil Street, right from Sanskrit College to Luz Church Road and in Kalvi Varu Street, there are no proper footpaths to walk.
“Parking vehicles on both sides of these roads make it a Herculean task for us to walk, especially for senior citizens,” he said. He adds that the parking problem peaks during school hours.
“There is an exit point for a school in Kalvi Varu Street. Haphazard parking of cars to pick up their wards is an eyesore.” He further observes that vehicles parked near Sanskrit college where a dustbin is placed make it difficult for pedestrians.
Similarly, certain parts of the Santhome High Road do not have proper footpaths. A T David, a resident voiced his concern. He explained that opposite the Palm Shore Hotel at the Santhome High Road, there is an empty piece of waste land. “There used to be a government housing quarters before,” said David.
“But it has been demolished and is unused since a very long time. If its a possibility, the civic authorities can opt to use it for parking purposes.”
David also suggested that the Corporation officials take the step of barricading the footpaths with guard rails so it prevents drivers from parking their vehicles. “The government should take steps to solve this issue,” he said.
