Residents in the neighourhood planning to travel to Puducherry, Cuddalore and Chidambaram, hereafter need not travel all the way to CMBT at Koyambedu to board buses.
Instead, they can go to K K Nagar bus depot on Anna Main Road.
In a move to decongest the Dr MGR bus terminus at Koyambedu and Inner Ring Road, 167 buses run by Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation (Villupuram) and 20 buses of Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) were shifted to K K Nagar depot recently.
An official at K K Nagar depot said, “A separate place has been allotted for these outstation buses. During morning, the buses will come to K K Nagar depot. The drivers after getting the time slot, pick up the passengers and travel via Ashok Nagar.”
“This will in no way affect the exising MTC buses in the depot. The mofussil buses will be parked at Koyambedu during night. Also, the buses runs on rotation basis and there would not be any space crunch,” he added.
According to TNSTC officials, the shifting is done to beat traffic jams during peak hours from Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar. Also, frequent accidents at Ashok Nagar junction can be prevented, they said.
With these measures, over 20 per cent of buses have been taken off from Koyambedu bus terminus, which has resulted in free flow of vehicles from the terminus exits.
Until 10 October, Koyambedu terminus handled about 2,278 buses from eight transport corporations of Tamilnadu and other State depots. While 264 buses of TNSTC shifted to MMBT, 167 buses plying on ECR have been moved to K K Nagar.
