Madras HC stays Ravi Shankar event at Thanjavur Big Temple

Police posted in strength at Thanjavur Big Temple.

Chennai: Following a petition filed by activist Venkat, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today stayed further events by Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar from taking place inside the Big Temple in Thanjavur.

The move came after about 50 persons belonging to the CPI, CPI(M), VCK, DK and Thanjai Periya Kovil Recovery Group were arrested by the police today after they organised a protest march from Raja Raja Cholan statue to the temple, demanding a halt to the paid spiritual discourse and yoga class by Ravi Shankar that took place this morning in the temple.

The event was scheduled to take place tomorrow morning and evening as well but will not take place due to the court order.

The protesters said the temple belongs to the Archaeological Survey of India and shouldn’t become a commercial place where one is allowed only when one pays a fee.
