In the world of music, if it is mandolin, it is the late U Srinivas who is synonymous with the instrument. Now, with an aim to keep his memories alive, one of his disciples Aravind Bhargav, is all set to stage a concert at the Margazhi Mahotsav of Bharat Kalachar in T Nagar.
The event that will take place on 24 December, will also see keyboard vidwan Sathyanarayanan performing.
Speaking on this, Bhargav says, “I underwent tutelage with U Srinivas from the age of six and got the opportunity to learn from him for over 15 years.”
“He never differentiated between his disciples and used to provide equal opportunities for every one,” he adds.
Bhargav, who is a recipient of several awards including Padmasri U Srinivas Memorial Award by Trinity Arts Foundation and Yuva Kala Bharati from Bharat Kalachar, has also been empanelled as a Carnatic mandolin solo artist by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
Having been featured in a tribute video to his guru titled ‘Jaalam’, in collaboration with music director AR Rahman’s The Sunshine Orchestra and Airtel Super Singer, Bhargav said, “Srinivas Sir was admired by both classicists as well those who leaned towards modernity in Indian music. Despite his hectic travel schedules, he allotted ample time for students like me.”
“He was very passionate for teaching and determined to pass on knowledge to the next generation,” he adds.
It may be noted that Bhargav also performs during the Margazhi season at venues like Chennai Fine Arts and Kovai Thiruvaiyaru.
So how long will it take to learn the instrument ? “It depends upon the individual’s learning skills and interest, but to perform on stage, a minimum of six years is required,” he explains.
About his future plans, he states, “My guru had done phenomenal work in the field of Carnatic music and I would like to follow his footsteps to popularise mandolin.”
