Chennai: With the Election Commission announcing the by-election to Thiruvarur assembly constituency, DMK president M K Stalin Monday said the party would announce its candidate on 4 January.
The Thiruvarur seat fell vacant following the death of former chief minister and DMK MLA M Karunanidhi in August. The Election Commission yesterday said by-elections to Jind and Thiruvarur assembly seats would be held on 28 January and counting of votes on 31 January.
Speaking to reporters, Stalin said the party would announce its candidate after talks with its district secretaries and those who have expressed interest to contest. “A decision on this would be announced on 4 January evening,” he said.
Though 20 seats are vacant in the state assembly, the EC has announced by-poll only to Thiruvarur. The EC has not announced by-election to the Thiruparankundram constituency which fell vacant after the death of ruling AIADMK’s A K Bose and to the 18 other constituencies represented by disqualified AIADMK MLAs.
In a statement, the Election Commission said the model code of conduct will come into effect immediately. The by-poll in Haryana’s Jind constituency was necessitated by the death of INLD MLA Harichand Middha in August.
