Chennai: An advocate has moved the Madras High Court to direct the Election Commission to postpone the by-election to Tiruvarur that was announced Monday.
The by-election is scheduled to take place 28 January following the demise of DMK president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi.
Advocate Prashanth, who filed the case in court this morning, reasoned that since relief works were under way in Tiruvarur that was devastated by Cyclone Gaja, the by-election should be postponed as the model code of conduct would come into play.
Turning down his plea for an urgent hearing, the court said it would consider the case if it was filed as a petition.
