The second-half of 2018 was on experimentation mode in Kollywood that witnessed versatile movies. Following up on that, 2019, too, is going to be an extension of this in K’town that has a bunch of movies to watch out for. This comprises mainstream and parallel cinema.
Petta
After making a stamp by exploring new genre and narrative patterns through movies like Kabali, Kaala and 2.0, Rajinikanth is going back to his vintage form. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie promises to be a treat for fans of the Asian Superstar who badly wanted to see their ‘Thalaivar’ Rajini, than actor ‘Rajini’. The movie is set to release 10 January.
Viswasam
The wait of Ajith fans was intense as the actor did not have a single release in 2018. The last time they had a chance to see their Thala on screen was in Vivegam. Putting an end to the 14-month break, the Siva directorial venture is hitting the screens this Pongal with a plot set in a rural background. Already, the actor-director combo had a blockbuster, Veeram, which was of the same genre. So, expectations for Viswasam are sky high.
Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven
This movie should have hit the screens during Pongal weekend. But, due to lack of screens, it is getting pushed back a couple of weeks. After his re-entry through Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, this Sundar C directorial venture is going to be the first movie for Simbu where he is the only hero in the story, unlike CCV. With a promising trailer, the film has already set high expectations.
Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta
It is three years since the movie was announced in 2016. So, fans expect the release of this Dhanush-Gautham Menon combo soon. Due to various issues during production and post-production, the movie release has been postponed six times so far. However, the shoot for this film was completed last year and all that is left is the dubbing portion of actor Dhanush. With two songs that have already been chartbusters, the movie is expected to release before April 2019.
Peranbu
After three of his hits, Katrathu Tamil, Thangameengal and Taramani, this one from filmmaker Ram is being praised internationally already. After its world premiere, Asian premiere and Indian premiere in various film festivals, this movie, starring Mamooty, will hit the screens February. With an intense album from Yuvan Shankar Raja, the film is one of the most anticipated flicks among world-cinema lovers.
Sarvam Thaala Mayam
This is another gem that has already received international recognition. A musical entertainer from the well-acclaimed Rajiv Menon-A R Rahman combo, the movie, starring G V Prakash, will be releasing in February.
Kadaaram Kondaan
An official remake of the 2016 Hollywood crime-thriller Don’t Breathe, the film, bankrolled by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, will have Vikram in the lead and is directed by Rajesh M Selva. The film’s first look was revealed with Vikram in a rustic look with Malaysia (Kaadaaram in Sangam literature) in the backdrop.
Kaapaan
After collaborating with writers SuBa and Kabilan Vairamuthu, this time, filmmaker K V Anand has joined hands with noted crime novelist Pattukottai Prabhakar for this Suriya-starrer. The movie will also see Mohanlal and Arya in pivotal roles. With a very intriguing first look poster, the film is expected to be another international action drama from the director-actor combo after Ayan and Maatraan.
Vijay 63
After Theri and Mersal, the successful duo, Vijay and Atlee, is coming together for the third time for this sports drama. The movie will be hitting the screens Deepavali and is said to have at least 16 actresses on board along with Nayanthara, who plays the female lead. With music by A R Rahman, the film is bankrolled by AGS Entertainment.
Super Deluxe
Of all his eight upcoming films, this one is Vijay Sethupathi’s pick, as he has said so himself. He has joined hands with his favourite director, Thiagarajan Kumararaja, who caught the attention of the masses with his neo-noir gangster drama Aaranya Kaandam. In this film, Vijay Sethupathi plays a transgender. The film has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and has an ensemble cast of Mysskin, Samantha, Fahad Faasil and Ramya Krishnan.
Sivakarthikeyan 14
By breaking the image of a romantic or an action hero, this would be Siva’s first attempt to star in a genre to experiment his own abilities. Directed by filmmaker R Ravikumar of Indru Netru Naalai fame, this untitled flick is also a sci-fi film which is said to be an extra-terrestrial drama happening in space and Earth simultaneously. The film has music by A R Rahman.
