Chennai: The Supreme Court has consented for urgent hearing of the plea related to postponing of the Tiruvarur by-poll.
The Election Commission had announced that the by-election to Tiruvarur constituency, which fell vacant following the death of DMK president and former chief minister, M Karunanidhi, in August, would be held 28 January 2019.
But with Cyclone Gaja devastating the constituency in November 2018, concerns were raised about holding the by-election there as the model code of conduct would be in force and interfere with relief works.
The present petition by T Raja and Marimuthu in the Supreme Court has sought postponement of the by-election. The top court has agreed for urgent hearing of the case.
