Rs 50 lakh stolen by trio who posed as cops in Chennai

Chennai: A young entrepreneur lost Rs 50 lakh to a gang of men who initiated a business deal with him posing as policemen.

According to the police, Mohammed Ibrahim (25) from Choolaimedu runs a leather factory in Periamet. He recently met few persons who asked him to pay Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 50 lakh.

They claimed another party needed it and would return it as Rs 60 lakh of Rs 100 notes. Police said, one of them posed a policeman and often met Mohammed in a police vehicle with a driver.

Agreeing to the deal, yesterday, Mohammed Ibrhim, his brother Mohammed Imam along with their auditor set out in a car with the money.

The gang kept changing the meeting place and route often. Finally they decided to meet at Iyyappanthangal. However, a ‘fake’ police vehicle stopped them on the pretext of a vehicle check and fled with the cash.

The brothers chased after the vehicle and caught one person. Police identified him as Sathishkumar. On questioning him, another person was also arrested. Police said this was a case of ‘double cheating’ and ‘attention diversion’. They suspect the same gang had cheated a businessman in Pattinampakkam few months ago.
