CJI exits high-power panel on CBI Director

Ranjan Gogoi

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has dropped out of the high-powered selection panel that has to decide within one week on the future of Alok Verma, because he was in the Supreme Court bench that reinstated him as CBI Director yesterday.

The Chief Justice has nominated Justice AK Sikri for the meeting of the panel headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The nomination comes a day after the Supreme Court set aside a government order divesting Verma of his powers, and left it to the high-powered committee to consider the matter “at the earliest and, in any case, within a week from the date of this order.” In the meantime, Verma has been restricted from taking any major policy decisions.
