Car seized by police in Chennai goes up in flames

Chennai: In a bizarre incident, a car which was seized by the police during a routine vehicle check went up in flames at Vadapalani this morning.

Sources said the police were conducting checks at 100-Feet-Road, when they caught a man identified Madarasan (27) from Thanjavur who was driving car under the influence of alcohol. Police seized the vehicle and parked it near the Vadapalani flyover.

At 3.30 am, passersby informed the police that the vehicle was on fire. Police who arrived at the spot stopped a Metrowater lorry passing by and used the water in it to put off the fire.

The front portion of the vehicle was damaged. Police are conducting inquiries to find out if a faulty battery caused the fire or if somebody set the car on fire.
