The Greater Chennai police are going great guns. Close on the heels of bringing the whole city under the watchful eyes of CCTV cameras, they have now launched a new online citizen service — Police Verification Services — dispensing with the present system of visiting the police station for verification. Through this facility, citizens and private companies can apply for verification services on the Tamilnadu Police website www.eservices.tnpolice.gov.in. The online services include Self-Verification, Job Verification, Tenant Verification and Domestic Help Verification. The charges are also nominal and lesser than what were earlier collected for manual procedure.
The aim of the Police Verification Services is to verify the identity of the person, his/her current address and to check if s/he was involved in any criminal case as per records available with the Tamilnadu police. This service is applicable only for verifying the persons residing in Tamilnadu. The police verification will be completed within 15 days from the date of receipt of the application. This service completely dispenses with the need for citizens and private companies to visit a police station for police verification.
Times are changing and technology has developed a lot. In tune with the times, policing should also be upgraded to meet the growing challenges. The top brass of the department seems to have understood this fully well, which can be seen in the latest developments. Those in other levels should also realise this, and police personnel of all ranks, till the constable rank, should upgrade themselves. Only then, criminals can be kept at bay and people can see the police as their real friends.
