Chennai: Documents relating to raids made at the residence of Tamilnadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar and others in connection with the alleged bribery during a by-poll to the RK Nagar Assembly constituency in 2017 has been submitted in the Madras High Court by the Income Tax Department on Thursday.
A bench comprising Justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam received the sealed documents and directed the court registry to keep them in safe custody. The matter has been adjourned to 18 January for further hearing.
A CBI probe into the matter has been sought by the petitioners, including Maruthu Ganesh – the DMK candidate in the April by-election. The election was cancelled following complaints of malpractices.
Earlier, the counsel for Ganesh objected to the I-T Department’s request not to reveal the contents of the documents. He said once the department decided to share its confidential documents and secret reports to the Election Commission, which had cancelled the by-polls relying on them, it cannot now raise the secrecy plea.
There should be absolute transparency in the court proceedings in a case of involving public interest and questioning wastage of public money, the counsel said.
The returning officer of the constituency, on a direction by the Election Commission, had lodged a police complaint on 27 April, and an FIR was also registered. During an earlier hearing, the police came under fire for not giving the names of the accused in the FIR.
