Puducherry: Five patients at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research were given a new lease of life by a brain dead patient in Puducherry on Friday. The dead persons’ kidneys, corneas and heart were harvested and transplanted on five patients.
According to a release issued by the institute, the deceased was a daily wage labourer from Villupuram district in Tamilnadu. He had met with an accident last week and sustained severe head injury.
He was initially treated at the government general hospital in Sankarapuram and subsequently at another government hospital in Tamilnadu. His condition was, however, critical and he was declared brain dead after being brought to the institute.
The patient’s organs were harvested after the consent from his relatives. According to the release, the heart has been sent to Chennai and the kidneys and corneas were transplanted on four patients.
