MRTS harassment case: Southern Rly’s new rules for staff; promises stiff action 

Chennai: The Chennai division of Southern Railway has taken stern action against the men who were involved in harassing a woman commuter at Taramani MRTS station 5 January.

They also reinforced guidelines to ensure the safety of women commuters by asking the contractors to submit a list of employees and carry out police verification of the staff.

A press release said in view of the unfortunate incident, all the manning contractors employed in the division for various works in the public areas of stations have been advised to submit the entire list of staff working under them, indicating their names, addresses and qualifications.

Along with this, all the contractors have been advised to process for police verification for the antecedents of all the persons engaged to execute railway work and send a compliance report to their coordinating railway offices at the earliest.

Also the contractors have been asked to strictly ensure that all the contract employees engaged in manning activity wear their ID card which is countersigned by the competent authority of Railways, on their person at all times when they are on duty and not to misuse the card.


The press release said, ‘With regard to the unfortunate incident at Taramani 5 January, the contractor has terminated the services of the lift operators involved in the incident on whom FIR has been registered by the Government Railway Police. These two persons will not be taken under any contract for personnel in Railway premises in future.’

The commercial clerk involved has also been placed under suspension with immediate effect, the release said.
