Chennai: The Tamilnadu government is committed to shutting down liquor shops, assured Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar this morning.
Speaking to mediapersons here, he said it was the DMK that had abolished prohibition when it was ruling the state.
During the 2016 elections, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa had made a promise that 500 liquor shops, run by TASMAC, will be shut if she was voted to power.
This has happened, said Jayakumar. The AIADMK government will continue to gradually close liquor shops, he told mediapersons when asked about the government’s stand on prohibition. He said it was not possible to enforce prohibition at one go as it would lead to people taking to illicit liquor and loss of lives.
He was accompanied by Tamil Language Minister K Pandiarajan during the interaction.
