Bengaluru: A boat carrying around 26 pilgrims capsized at Karwar beach, killing eight persons and one is reportedly missing.
According to police sources, the pilgrims had gone to attend the annual fair Kurumagada island in the Arabian sea. Nearly 1,000 people had gone there to take part in the fair and the boat capsized while returning to the Karwar beach.
The Indian Navy reported that it had carried out the rescue operations and that there were 26 people in the boat of which 17 were rescued.
Eight bodies have been recovered by the navy and Coast Guard and search is on for one missing person. The Navy has also launced a Dornier aircraft from Goa for search and rescue.
