Pedestrians find no way to walk in Choolaimedu High Road

Chennai: Choolaimedu High Road is one of the most prominent and vital stretches in the neighbourhood. It is common to see heavy traffic here everyday, as it connects major localities like Kodambakkam, Mambalam, Saidapet and Guindy.

Unfortunately, this stretch appears to get narrower with each passing day, thanks to the increasing number of encroachments by street vendors and parked vehicles. As a result, pedestrians are left with no choice but to walk directly on the road. ‘

The stretch is congested till late night. The vehicles parked on the sides, make it difficult for people to walk,’ says Khashi Pandiyan, a bakery shop owner at Choolaimedu High Road.

Likewise, another resident, Vatsan, a senior citizen, shared his concern. ‘Walking here is a nightmare for us. We have to risk our lives while wading through commuters, bustling traffic, juice stalls and fruit vendors,’ he says.

Similarly, a pharmacist at 1st Street, Choolaimedu, said, ‘This issue has led to chaos throughout the road, causing a lot of inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians’.

Residents in this locality hope that the authorities take measures to ease the issue, by regulating street vendors and illegal parking.
