Kamal Haasan urges villagers not to accept money to vote in elections

Chennai: Do not take the ‘advance’ amount that politicians pay to you for voting, said actor and politician, Kamal Haasan.

He was speaking at one of his regular grama sabha meetings in Gunamangalam village, Nellikuppam taluk, Cuddalore district, today when he said people should not accept money to vote.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam party founder urged the people not to ‘pledge’ (adagu vaikatheergal) themselves for the next five years after taking money to vote.

He also said they should, instead, be stressing on the need to hold civic body elections.

Kamal has been conducting village-level meetings, called grama sabha meetings, regularly after the founding of his party Makkal Needhi Maiam. He says the aim of these meetings is to strengthen democracy at the grassroots-level.

He has also been a bitter critic of politicians bribing voters at the time of elections.
