Chennai is sporting a whole new look, thanks to the Global Investors Meet (GIM), that was conducted in the city recently.
The last few weeks saw traffic islands, medians and roadside parks being renovated, and the Corporation on a cleaning spree.
Saplings too were planted to enhance the aesthetics of the neighbourhood. According to sources, the traffic islands at Gandhi Mandapam, the one at Sardar Patel Road, Greenways Road, Race Course Road and Velacheri Main Road, are some of the places that have been spruced up. A Corporation official said, “All these projects were tendered earlier. But we hurried up the pace, because of the GIM.” The idea was to bring in greenery on the roadsides, it is said.
“Several delegates stayed here in various hotels at Adyar and MRC Nagar. Some routes in the neighbourhood were taken. We manged to do it on a war-footing basis, by getting man-power from other zones,” noted Executive Engineer of Zone 13, Murali.
Similarly, another official stated that they had installed lights, painted the grills, repaired damages and did patchwork, apart from planting new saplings in the neighbourhood parks.
“Henceforth, we will maintain these places with 30-park labourers,” he added.
