Girl, mother arrested for stealing from actress house

Chennai: A teenage girl who was working in the house of actress Banupriya, and her mother were arrested on charges of breach of trust and theft here Thursday.

Actress Banupriya’s brother Gopalakrishnan lodged a complaint at the Pondy Bazaar police station against the 16-year-old domestic
help and her mother Prabhavathi.

It may be noted that on 24 January, Prabhavathi lodged a complaint in Andhra Pradesh that her daughter has been held captive in Banupriya’s house and that she has been sexually abused.

The girl from Andhra Pradesh was appointed in February last year while her mother Prabhavathi visited her once in two months.

Recently, Banupriya and her brother came to know that the girl has been stealing valuables from the house and gave it to Prabhavathi. When asked about it, they duo accepted the crime, assured to return the stolen items and left for native.

However, the girl’s family filed a sexual harassment case and the girl was sent to a shelter home in Kellys. On 31 January, Prabhavathi came to Chennai to meet the girl when the police brought her to the station for questioning. The mother and daughter admitted to stealing the items in three phases.

In the complaint it was said that the juvenile stole 10 sovereigns, Rs 1 lakh in cash, an iPad, a camera and two watches. The police recovered Rs 3,000 from the mother-daughter duo.

The girl has been sent to the Government Observatory home and Prabhavathi has been remanded under judicial custody.
