Chennai: Right from childhood, one should cultivate the habit of learning new activities, whether in academics or sports, said Sandeep Rai Rathore, Additional Director General of Police, State Special Task Force, after inaugurating a new synthetic basketball court at Ramakrishna Mission Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Krishna Street on 23 January.
Sandeep Rai listed out how he balanced his academics and sports, both of which helped him in the police department. Speaking on the occasion, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, secretary, Swami Padmasthananda, said, Swami Vivekananda insisted youngsters to take up sports to be fit to face and overcome challenges.
The new court inaugurated on the birth anniversary of Indian leader Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose will benefit around 3500 boys of Ramakrishna Mission Schools to learn and practice the sport, he added.
The facility, built at a cost of around Rs 12 lakh, was sponsored by Rotary Club of Madras East, a press release said. Rotarys senior officials including its district governor Babu Peram participated.
The event also saw the honouring of veteran player and former secretary of Chennai District Basketball Association, SS Nissar, at the venue.
Senior player Meenakshi Sundaram was also present. An exhibition match was conducted at the new court among various teams, with AVM Rajeswari School winning the match, the release added.
