Ramapuram bridge extension nears completion

Commuters and residents of Ramapuram can now let out a sigh of relief as the bridge extension works are going on in full-swing. For a long time, motorists found it very hard to cross this narrow bridge.

Its a night mare during peak hours, and the flyover is congested with vehicles all the time. Once the expansion work gets complete, motorists can escape the usual jam.

“Usually, we face the traffic issues at Porur signal, Manapakkam junction and other major junctions. But at least the vehicles keep moving at those spots. But the Ramapuram bridge is so narrow that motorists find it difficult to cross it during peak hours,” says Raghuvaran, a Porur resident. According to the sources, the ongoing work will be completed in the few days, and the commuters can then enjoy the wide path.

It is also notable that another new flyover connecting Nesapakkam and Nandambakkam across Adyar river that was proposed some months ago will begin soon. An estimated budget of Rs 360 crore has been allotted for this project.

Every vehicle commuting from Nesapakkam to Nandambakkam and Manapakam travel via Bharathiyar Main Road, Kamaraj Salai, Ramapuram, Thiruvalluvar Salai and MGR Garden. Due to this, a huge traffic prevails at Ramapuram and Mount-Poonamalle stretch, especially during peak hours.

Last year, in order to connect Nesapakkam, Anna Main Road, and Lakeview Road, a 300-meter length link road was laid at a cost of Rs 2.41 crore. Following this, Bharathiyar Main Road and Kaanu Nagar Main Road were extended by another 60-feet.

Now, the new flyover will start from Kaanu Nagar to Nandambakkam across Adyar river. In addition to the MGR flyover in Porur and the overbridge at Manapakkam, this one would be the third major bridge in the neighbourhood to reduce traffic congestion.
