Railway ground in Chennai becomes ideal place for miscreants

Liquor bottles found at Tambaram Railway Ground.

The Tambaram Railway Ground in Chennai is one of the hotspots of the neighbourhood.

It is the most happening place in the locality with a variety of events taking place such as cricket, sports, walking, cycling and boxing. Adding to the long list recently is drinking.

Though the ground is used for recreational and sports events during the day time, the spot has become the destination of drunkards after dawn.

Rahul, a regular visitor said, “Over the years, Railway Ground has seen drastic change in the infrastructure and on safety aspects. But there are several blind spots in and around the place. These spots are where miscreants dwell during the night.”

He said the streetlights on the road connecting the Tambaram Railway Station and Tambaram Railway ground do not work properly.

“Several liquor bottles can be found in the stretch which at times worries people who use the stretch during the night. There is no frequent police patrolling in the area, which is also a cause of concern,” he added.

Manjula, a resident said, “CCTV cameras are installed only in few houses in the Railway quarters, but as far the ground is concerned, there are no CCTVs. Considering that most people use the ground in twilight. Installation of CCTV cameras in the locality has become a necessity. It would also be helpful if a police booth is constructed in the area,” she said.

Residents also requested that more mast lights should be installed in the ground for the safety of the users.
