Traders in Puducherry protest against ban on plastic products

Puducherry: Making an appeal to the government, the Puducherry Plastic Manufacturers and Traders Association said the ban on plastics from 1 March would affect several workers and throw out of gear industries functioning here.

A release issued by the association said the ban would result in dislocation of around 30,000 workers engaged directly or indirectly and throw out of gear industries functioning in Puducherry.

Alleging that the ban only targets the local industrial units and corporates sending packages from other States would not come under the ban, the association urged the government to set up a panel to look in to the matter

On 13 January, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy had announced that the state cabinet has decided to ban the production, sale and use of single-use plastic products in the Union Territory from 1 March 2019.
