Coimbatore: Nearly 700 workers of BJP, VHP, Hindu Munnani and Bajrang Dal, gathered at the RS Puram to hold a meeting in memory of victims of serial bomb blasts that took place on 14 February 1998, were arrested by the police yesterday.
BJP national secretary H Raja and Coir Board Chairman and former BJP MP C P Radhakrishnan were also among the people arrested. The event was said to have been held even after the police had denied permission. All of them were later released.
A tight security cover was held in and around the area and all shops and commercial establishments in the vicinity downed their shutters.
The bomb blasts which occurred 21 years ago ahead of senior BJP leader L K Advani’s election rally rocked the city. 52 people were killed and over 200 injured.
