Chennai: A petition to immediately conduct by-polls in Tiruvarur and Thiruparankundram constituencies in Tamilnadu was dismissed by the Supreme Court today.
In a recent hearing, the judge of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court opined that another member of the same party can be appointed as MLA in case the previous member passes away, without conducting re-election. This would save tax-payers’ money, they said.
The two seats have been vacant following the death of DMK president and Tiruvarur MLA M Karunanidhi and A K Bose of the AIADMK. Soon after, a petition was filed to hold by-elections to the two constituencies according to the Representation of the People Act.
However, there are different reasons for not holding the by-elections.
