Congress workers’ killing: Chennithala cancels son’s reception

Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of the killings of two Youth Congress workers Kripesh and Sarath Lal in Kerala, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala yesterday cancelled his son Rohit’s wedding reception which was scheduled to be held at Thiruvananthapuram and Haripad on 21 and 23 February, respectively.

Expressing solidarity with the families of the deceased, Chennithala said the amount would be instead used for conducting the marriage of a deceased activist’s sister. “The newly wed couple Dr Rohit and Dr Sreeja have decided to utilise the saved sum towards the marriage for Kripesh’s sister,” he said in a statement.

On Sunday night, the deceased, Kripesh and Sharat Lal were returning home after taking part in a function when they were blocked by a gang who hacked them to death. Relatives of deceased have alleged that the CPI(M) was behind the killings and that the two had previously received threats.

Normal life was affected and violence was witnessed at many places in Kerala after the Youth Congress in the State had called for bandh and forcefully shutdown many shops. Two people were taken into custody over the murders.
